In the Cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch, the Swiss artist Maja Rieder is showing current works on paper as well as a site-specific installation. Her abstract painting captivates with luminous colours and an expansive presence.
Maja Rieder’s works with India ink and gouache on paper show juxtaposed or superimposed fields of strongly contrasting colours. The artist works with diagonals which divide the rectangular or square format into geometric shapes, resulting in the letter X or a St. Andrew’s cross. She applies the paint by pouring it over a sheet of paper spread out on the ground. The paint leaves traces of drips and rivulets in its wake as it spreads across the surfaces. Maja Rieder also folds, superimposes, covers, and overlaps lengths of paper, or stretches it over wooden frames before applying the paint for her so-called “drum pictures”. Seen as a whole, the colour fields form spaces, while the lines create a network. The artist wants her works to oscillate between proximity and expanse, and tension and calm.
Maja Rieder often produces series, thinks in groups, families, or sequences of works. However, the individual sheets also stand alone and can be viewed as such. Besides medium- and large-format pieces, she also creates space-related works and installations. The Swiss artist will be presenting her latest works on paper as well as a site-specific installation in the Cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch. Her abstract painting with its radiant colours and expansive presence is captivating.
Maja Rieder was born in Niederbipp in 1979 and currently lives in Basel. From 1998"–"2002 she apprenticed to become a goldsmith and subsequently studied art at the Academy of Art and Design in Basel from 2003"–"2006. From 2009"–"2011 Maja Rieder obtained a fine arts master’s degree at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts North-Western Switzerland in Basel. In 2013 the artist won a IAAB studio scholarship at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, and in 2015 she received a work contribution from the Basel-City art loan. Since 2010 Maja Rieder’s works have been shown in exhibitions and can be found in several cantonal art collections. Her media of choice are drawing and installation.
The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist. An accompanying catalogue will be published by modo verlag GmbH, Freiburg im Breisgau.
