The exhibition at the Museum Franz Gertsch presents insights into the series on which Valérie Favre is currently working on.
Valérie Favre is an artist who is primarily concerned with painting. She explores it in series of works, each of which deals with a specific theme. The subjects of her figural paintings and works on paper derive from the artist’s own imagination and her inner world as well as from a broad spectrum of art, literature, and philosophy. Favre furthermore produces an abstract work annually in her “Balls and Tunnels” series, a procedure she wishes to retain for the rest of her life.
The exhibition at the Museum Franz Gertsch, parts of which were previously shown at the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain in Strasbourg under the title “Valérie Favre. La Première Nuit du monde” (November 26th, 2015 to March 27th, 2016), presents insights into the series on which Favre is currently working on. Focus is placed on the large triptychs, her “théâtres” that present us the “folly” of existence in a kind of painted world theatre. A second important aspect is made up by paintings belonging to the series known as “Ghost (after witches' flight by Goya),” small-format works that deal in part with Goya’s witches as well as with dreams and other ghost-like apparitions. Abstract works from the “Balls and Tunnels” are also planned for the exhibition. The painterly spectrum is rounded out by drawings and collages in which Favre’s critical, geopolitically-oriented occupation with our present-day world is even more evident.
Valérie Favre was born in 1959 in Evilard near Biel/Bienne. After an intense phase working the area of stage design, theatre, and film in Geneva from the mid 1970s, Favre moved to Paris in the early 1980s, where she became well known as a painter and was awarded her first prizes. The artist moved to Berlin in 1998, where she has been teaching painting at the Universität der Künste since 2006.
