Thomas Ritz

The Elusive Horizon

08.03.2014 – 29.06.2014

Current works by Thomas Ritz will be shown in the print room.

Current works by Thomas Ritz (b. 1966) will be shown in the print room. The space’s tranquil, concentrated atmosphere enables the multifaceted works to be seen from a new perspective.

Thomas Ritz’s artistic oeuvre is marked by dealings with inner and outer images. His small to large-scale mixed-media paintings and drawings derive both from the reservoir of his memory as well as from existing picture material such as photographs. He succeeds in the process to capture feelings in combination with expansive landscapes, human beings, water zones and abstract forms. Although the works often capture a specific point in time, they are in motion and almost seem to dissolve before the viewer’s eyes. Purposely employed dark sections lend the works a dramatic moment. In formal terms, the artist explores the interaction of horizontals and verticals and plays with the boundaries of the pictorial space. Thomas Ritz lives and works in his native city of Basel.

The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist.
