Some things can be left unsaid

The German artist Sebastian Speckmann works with linocuts, drawings, computer graphics, collages and installations. His prints tend to be dark. The plates with their representational depictions are worked linearly and point by point by means of diverse cutting and engraving methods. The landscapes and scenes produced in this way appear real and familiar, although upon closer examination they cannot be truly entrenched into time and place. The motifs derive from the repertory of Sebastian Speckmann’s personal experiences, memories and images, but can also be associated with those from the world of each and every viewer.

The exhibition in the Print Room of the Museum Franz Gertsch, the first Swiss show of the multifaceted printmaker, presents current large and small format linocuts in addition to a wall installation and features new works.

Sebastian Speckmann was born in Wolfen (D) in 1982 and now lives in Leipzig (D). He studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (under Neo Rauch and Heribert C. Ottersbach) and the Royal Academy of Arts, London (GB). The artist works largely with linocuts and has exhibited regularly since 2009.

The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle in collaboration with the artist.
