The exhibition in the print room of the Museum Franz Gertsch is the virtuoso printmaker’s first show in Switzerland.
Claas Gutsche occupies himself with traces of the German-German past in his partly very large linocuts on fine Japanese paper. Raised in Blankenburg (Harz), he experienced the Fall of the Berlin Wall at the age of seven and thus knew both East Germany as well as the new Federal Republic. Many of his linocuts show atmospherically-charged places whose historical significance only becomes apparent to the visitor with additional information, for example the picture title. The viewer is confronted with associations to the Nazi era, the German Democratic Republic, or recent disconcerting news reports. The technically sophisticated works are printed in black-and-white or colour, whereby the artist works in part in the lost form technique.
Claas Gutsche was born in 1982 in Blankenburg (Harz) and now lives in Berlin. He received his artistic training at the Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Burg Giebichenstein, Halle/Saale, the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London. The artist produces large and small-format linocuts and has regularly exhibited since 2005. He has already been awarded numerous German and British prizes/grants and his works are also represented in international collections.
